Three days off and ten years gone
while I remember your first turkey
and my fool proof instructions
on what to do and when.
We were far apart that year,
close in heart, you two thousand
miles away merging east and west-
crispy pata and cranberry sauce.
I held your spirit near that day
watching in my mind you tend the bird,

Head into the wind,
sidewalk cracks avoided
on my way to sweeter
dreams and days held
beneath a sky where
oaken castoffs skitter
as they fly.
Beloved take my heart
in autumn days
to gilded fields where
apple branches woo the
little girl who ruled the world
and claimed each day
when I was still a boy.
Fleet of foot and
loose of chains that
bind me where I stand-

If Nothing Else

I can tell you now-
if I tell you nothing else…
that there is weight
beyond the words,
beneath each ragged
beating of the heart.
And all that’s suffered
sooner falls away
then lends forever
aching through the verse.
Each precious second
trembles in the wind
on breath inhaled and caught
within the throat.
Exhaled again…
to rest against your face-
a wresting love
to parallel your own.
